
One of the greatest misunderstandings about yoga — especially when ethics are discussed — is the belief that the path demands instant perfection. It doesn’t. Yoga has never been about flipping a moral switch overnight. It is a practice of awareness unfolding over time. And that matters deeply when we talk about food, habit, culture, and change.
The Path Is a Process, Not a Performance
In classical yoga, transformation happens through abhyasa (steady practice) and vairagya (non-attachment). Not through guilt. Not through shame. Not through external pressure to perform the role of ‘yogi.’
Many people come to yoga carrying lifelong conditioning — cultural, familial, economic, and emotional. Food is tied to identity, survival, memory, and belonging. Expecting ethical clarity to emerge without transition ignores how human nervous systems actually change.Awareness usually arrives first. Then discomfort. Then experimentation. Then, slowly, embodiment.
Transition Is Not Hypocrisy — It’s Honesty
There is a difference between denial and transition.Denial says: “This doesn’t matter.”Transition says: “This matters, and I’m learning how to respond.”
You can recognize that ahimsa points toward veganism while still working through access, health, habit, or fear. That doesn’t make you a fraud. It makes you conscious. Yoga does not ask for purity. It asks for sincerity.
Small Shifts Are Still Yogic Shifts
In a culture that celebrates extremes, it’s easy to overlook the power of incremental change. Choosing plant-based meals more often. Removing one animal product at a time. Learning the realities of food systems instead of avoiding them. Listening to your body as it adapts. These are not failures to commit.
They are expressions of svadhyaya — self-study in real time.
Compassion Includes Yourself
Ahimsa is not only about how we treat animals or the planet. It also includes how we treat ourselves during change.Harsh self-judgment rarely leads to sustainable transformation. Curiosity does. Patience does. Support does.
Yoga invites us to reduce harm — not replace one form of violence with another, directed inward.
Let the Practice Work on You
Ethical clarity often deepens as the practice deepens. As breath slows. As sensitivity increases. As the nervous system settles. What once felt impossible can begin to feel natural. What once felt like sacrifice can begin to feel like relief. This is not moral superiority. It is integration.
Walking the Path Together
If yoga teaches us anything, it is that liberation is relational. We learn through community, conversation, and shared courage. You do not need to arrive fully formed to belong on the path. You only need to stay willing.
Yoga is not asking you to be perfect. It is asking you to be honest. If your values are shifting, let them. If your habits are changing, honor the pace. The path unfolds one conscious choice at a time.
My own transition was several years long and hardly a linear progression….it was a bumpy ride at best, lots of questions since my family was and is on their own journey. It isn’t easy, but ultimately it just makes sense, it comes naturally now, and I still don’t demand perfection from myself. If my mom has lovingly made a vegetarian meal for me…my ahimsa practice includes honoring her effort. She knows I’m ‘vegan’ what she doesn’t always remember is what that entails. 🙂 Compassion…not perfection!
